In the realm I grew up in, there was no democracy. It struck me in all of you cutesy muffin munchers, that every one of you I met held this thing very dearly. Go Earth! That is nice, seeing all of you united in loving the vote.

Who loves the vote! Do I hear someone say YAY?

If I may say something, though. I’ve only been living in this dimension (that terrible word) for a few decades, but I can’t help noticing that there’s a gap between the idealistic intention of democracy and the practical realisation. Like a muffin recipe and the sugary goo that sits next to my computer. And people anywhere on the political spectrum choose to chew it with a bitter smile. Sugary goo is better than salted pickles… We can educate the people to make better muffins... etc.

Voters do not make informed decisions. How can you expect them to? There is far too much information to cover, far too much to understand about the political system, about law-making, about the varied methods of promoting health, safety, education, etc. How can you know what person or party are best suited to run the country, when you only have biased information and gut feeling on the policies they represent? It puzzles Mr Mackerel!

The majority of people (and that’s what it’s all about, right?) do not even try. It is indefensible to say this can change, as drastic changes in reality have so far only occurred in the dimension where I once rode my chariots of unspeakable propulsion (not rhubarb). It might be good to acknowledge: voting on a larger scale than the local community serves only one purpose: to send a signal. Usually this is a signal of spite.

Democracy only works on a small scale. And on a small scale it works amazingly well. I love seeing you all challenge each other on a direct level, face to face, with actual knowledge about what is being discussed, about precedents and consequences, admitting to pros and cons. Anyone can get involved and nobody has to.

Is this a call for decentralisation? Wait, is that a chicken melting? Why do I have so many chickens in my backyard? WHERE DID THAT BACKYARD COME FROM ALL OF A SUDDEN? I can’t believe that chicken is melting, that’s so sad… But what am I calling for? I’m just observing, sexy Earthling. One thing is for sure, what we don’t need is to desperately attract more national voters through media frenzies and playing on people’s emotions. That will just give us the same overcharged coffee chain muffins day after day. This metaphor has now officially expired and I will bury it in my new found backyard (with what’s left of the chicken). Mr. Mackerel signing off.
